    Identafi™ 3000's Optical Spectroscopy Profiled At Oral Oncology 2nd World Congress in Toronto - Two Texas Scientists Who Developed "Multispectral" Technology Participate in Presentations on Its Use in Diagnosis of Oral Cancer

    TORONTO, August 26, 2009 — Two Houston scientists who helped develop the breakthrough optical technology for cancer early detection called "multispectral" spectroscopy were among the contributors who delivered oral cancer research presentations at the recent Second World Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO).

    "Oral Oncology: Imagine the Future" (www.iaoo2009.com/index.htm) was the theme of the conference, which was held July 8-11 at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel.

    Dr. Rebecca Richards-Kortum of the Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging Laboratory at Rice University in Houston and Dr. Ann M. Gillenwater of the Head and Neck Surgery and Epidemiology Department at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston were members of the team that delivered an IAOO presentation titled "Depth-Sensitive Optical Spectroscopy for Diagnosis of Oral Neoplasia."

    Gillenwater and Richards-Kortum collaborated with other researchers in another presentation, titled "Autofluorescence Imaging for Early Detection of Oral Neoplasia."

    Gillenwater also participated in two other presentations at the IAOO conference titled, respectively, "Depth-Sensitive Optical Spectroscopy for Diagnosis of Oral Neoplasia" and "Autofluorescence Imaging for Early Detection of Oral Neoplasia."

    Gillenwater is Director of M.D. Anderson's Oral Cancer Prevention Center. Her research focuses on the detection and treatment of early oral cancer and pre-cancer, including Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC).

    Richards-Kortum is the Stanley C. Moore Professor of Bioengineering, Chair of the Bioengineering Department, and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University. Her research centers on new, noninvasive cancer detection technologies that use high-resolution, optical imaging; the use of fluorescent imaging agents for cancer detection; biophysical studies of the light-scattering properties of cells and tissues; and the use of fiber optic sensors for in vivo detection of cancer.

    Richards-Kortum is one of the founding scientists of Trimira, LLC, which is a subsidiary of Remicalm LLC, a privately held Houston medical device and optical imaging company.
